Dundee United forward Kevin Smith has joined English League One newcomers Notts County on trial.

That was after Arabs manager Peter Houston advised him that he will find it hard to make the senior side with a number of more experienced players currently ahead of him in the pecking order.

The Edinburgh-born front-runner has already had a couple of successful loan spells with Raith Rovers and was heading off to train with the Magpies this week

“I know County`s assistant manager, Dave Kevan, and I said to him he should have a look at him,” Houston told The Press and Journal.

“With the amount of attackers we have I told Kevin it may be worth looking elsewhere. I`m not pushing him out the door, but I have told him it will be difficult to get a first-team place.

“I`ve allowed him to go down this week and if they want to extend it I`d probably allow them to take him with them to their camp in Austria. But we`ll see what happens.”
