SPL Split = No Atmosphere + Nothing To Play For

There are 12 teams in the Scottish Premier League, which would result in 44 matches if every club played each other 4 times.

So, the SPL came up with a cunning ‘Balrick-esk` plan… the top 6 split, which means each club only plays 38 matches a season.

However, there are bound to be critics of the Top6 split, mainly supporters of those clubs which end up in the bottom 6 and therefore miss out on another money-spinning tie against the Old Firm sides.

In the past, Dundee United have been one of those clubs, but this season they have managed to break into the top6 and have been rewarded with a tie against Celtic at Tannadice on the last day of the campaign.

“The top six works if you’re in it, but if you’re in the bottom six, it’s not so good,” admitted Dundee United manager Craig Levein this week.

“I know this from last season because that was the first time I’d experienced the bottom half of the table.”

“There’s nothing to play for and the atmosphere in the games is almost like pre-season.”

“As much as people talk them up, it’s just not great at all so I’m not a huge fan of the split, but when you look at some of the top-six games on paper, it’s frightening.”

“It’s all still to play for – there’s the race for Europe and, of course, the title.”
