Dundee United came back from behind for a 3-1 victory against Queen of the South at Palmerston Park.

The Tangerines fell into arrears midway through the opening half when Dom Thomas found the back of the net from the edge of the area.

However, Thomas Mikkelsen had them level within three minutes as the interval was reached back on even terms.

Matthew Smith then sent the visitors into the lead soon after the restart, before later adding his second from close-range.

Mikkelsen had earlier forced keeper Jack Leighfield to block, although it was Thomas cutting inside and curling the opening goal into the top corner.

But Danish striker Mikkelsen converted Smith’s cross on the turn to swiftly cancel that out on twenty-four minutes.

On loan keeper Harry Lewis was though required following efforts from ex-United midfielder John Rankin and Stephen Dobbie, before goalscorer Thomas also drove wide.

Defender Mark Durnan then recovered from a head wound prior to Smith exchanging passes with Billy King and successfully locating the top corner early in the second-half.

Jamie Robson was next wide of the mark for the visitors, who nevertheless extended their advantage as Paul Quinn headed back King’s 57th minute corner and Smith did the rest.

Derek Lyle had the ball in the net at the other end but it was ruled out for offside; that after Willo Flood had already been denied by Leighfield.

Meanwhile, Smith almost claimed a late hat-trick as Leighfield once again came to the rescue and avoided further damage.
