Motherwell player Scott McDonald has put his name into the record books by grabbing the 5000th SPL goal against Falkirk this afternoon.

Maurice Malpas`s side went head to head with Falkirk at Fir Park, needing a win to take they away from Dunfermline at the bottom of the table.

Although, things didn`t start well for the Steelmen as Falkirk took the lead through Anthony Stokes in the 36th minute.

However, two penalties from Motherwell`s Richie Foran turned the game on its head after a hand ball from Steven Thomson just before half-time and then in the 49th minute Keith Lasley was brought down by Falkirk`s Kenny Milne.

Former Dundee United player Maurice Malpas then watched as his side pushed forward to finish things, only to see another former United player grab the equalizer as Russell Latapy made it 2-2.

However, then came goal which sealed the win for Motherwell and put Scott McDonald into the record books scoring in the 75th minute to put his side 3-2 ahead.

Motherwell sealed the win later in the game as Calum Elliot netted in the 83rd minute and make things worse for Falkirk, Anthony Stokes was sent off for a 2nd bookable offence after 78minute.

Despite competition from his own team mate, Richie Foran who had already scored 2 from the spot and Aberdeen’s Darren Mackie who netted twice at East End park within minutes of Scott McDonald’s strike, the Motherwell player was there at the right time, when it mattered to put the ball in the back of the net.

Congratulations to Scott McDonald for the 5000th goal, he now joins such ‘legends` as Keigan Parker (St Johnstone, 1000th), Eugene Dadi (Aberdeen, 2000th), Shota Arveladze (Rangers, 3000th) and Derek Riordan (Hibs, 4000th).

It’s just a shame that it wasnt a Dundee United player who grab the headlines, but with the Saint Mirren match not until Sunday it put the United players at a disadvantage.

However, on a more positive note, at least the 5000th goal wasnt scored against Dundee United….then Craig Levein’s side would have gone down in history for being on the wrong end of a goal against St Mirren.

Every cloud…!!!!

Darren Mackie and Darren Mackie, I think he scored either side of the 5000th, either that or it would have been Russell Latapy would scored just a few minutes before McDonald.
