Former Dundee United captain Derek McInnes signed for 1st division promotion chasers Saint Johnstone yesterday.

The 35-year-old was released by Dundee United last season, one of several players off loaded by Craig Brewster to lower the wage bill at Tannadice.

Saints manager Owen Coyle had tried to sign McInnes immediately after he was released by United, but this time he got his man and signed him up until the end of the season.

The commanding midfielder, who has been playing for Millwall for the past few months, might be given a coaching role at McDirmid Park, which will give him the chance to pass on his wealth of experience to the younger players at the club.

McInnes has played all over the UK, including spells with Morton, Rangers, Toulouse, West Brom and Dundee United, but has decided to return to Scotland to be closer to his family after being released by Millwall.

“I went to Millwall in the summer on a two-year deal, but with an understanding that I would review things after six months to see how I was getting on with the travelling,” he told the Courier.

“My family stayed in Scotland but I missed them when I was down in London during the week. My wife is pregnant so I felt it was right to come back to Scotland.”

“I’ve known of Owen’s interest for a couple of weeks but I have nothing but praise for the way I have been treated by Millwall. It was just a case of the right club at the wrong time.”

“I’ve seen Saints a couple of times this season and have been impressed with them. Given their league position there doesn’t appear to be too much wrong. Hopefully I can add to what we already have here.”
