goalkeeper Derek Stillie insists Rangers’ stunning final-day title win last May can inspire the Tangerines to a place in the top six.

The Gers were widely believed to be out of the reckoning last season, but a win over Hibs, coupled with Celtic’s capitulation at Motherwell, handed Alex McLeish’s men the championship by a single point.

United are currently nine points off the top six, but Stillie insists it is not out of reach.

“The top six is a huge ask, we all know that, but it’s still possible so we have to keep focused on it,” he said.

“What it is going to take is a run of games, three or four wins in a row, but I definitely think we have the players here and the mentality to do that.

“Rangers winning the title last season is proof of what can happen if you believe. With a couple of weeks to go they looked dead and buried but they kept plugging away and got their reward on that amazing final day.

“In sport if you lose your belief then you’re done for – I can honestly say that’s not a problem at this club.

“Dundee United are a top-six club. We have the players to do it although we have underachieved. The fact we can admit that has made us even more determined to do something about it.”

Caley are looking to bounce back from the midweek Tennent’s Scottish Cup defeat at Partick Thistle.
