New manager Craig Brewster looked on as Dundee United closed out an era of sorts, with a late win against Falkirk at Tannadice.

Billy Dodds who took control of United for the first and last time today was afforded an ovation today as he walked out to the dug-out, and was given an equally good send off as he left the park after his side had won the game late on.

Mark Wilson who is expected to sign for Celtic by Tuesday was marked by his absence, and was replaced by Stuart Duff, but this is one void they will certainly need to void. Derek Stillie was also missing due to the flu, and Craig Samson made his senior debut, deputising in goal.

David Fernandez gave United the lead with an exquisite 36th-minute chip. He had Mulgrew waiting for the ball on the left of the box, but instead spotted the keeper off the line, and chipped the ball into the back of the net.

Daniel McBreen’s 68th-minute equaliser looked to have earned the Bairns a draw, but Billy Dodds made two late changes, in a desperate attempt to win the game.

Remarkably, both substitutes had a vital say. Lee Miller knocked Mulgrew’s cross back to McInnes, and from the edge of the box the veteran midfielder lashed a volley high into the roof of the net.
