Dundee United failed to capitalise on Motherwell`s slip-up against Celtic, as Aberdeen won all 3 points in a close encounter up at Pittodrie.
Goals from Richard Foster and Karim Touzani gave Jimmy Calderwood`s side a 2-1 victory, as United surrendered a great chance to move closer to 3rd spot and the remaining UEFA Cup place.
A great individual goal from Danny Swanson threw the Tangerines a lifeline early in the 2nd half, but United failed to break down a stubborn Don`s defence and returned to Tannadice with nothing to show for their efforts.
Earlier in the afternoon, Motherwell lost out to Celtic 2-1 at Fir Park, after taking a 1-0 lead through Chris Porter early in the 2nd half.
However, goals from Scott McDonald and Georgios Samaras gave Celtic an important victory, which also gave Dundee United a great chance to go 3rd, if they could beat Aberdeen.
The result at Pittodrie means that, unbelievably, Aberdeen have a chance of sneaking the 3rd spot this season.
Although, the Dons need to win both of their remaining matches against Motherwell and Rangers, while hoping that Hibs, Motherwell and Dundee United fail to take anything from their own matches.
Final score:
Aberdeen 2-1 Dundee United
