New manager Ray McKinnon allowed his head to rule his heart before taking over at relegated Dundee United.

The 45-year-old has returned to Tannadice along with assistant Laurie Ellis having spent the last year with promotion-chasing Championship outfit Raith Rovers.

Ellis replaces Gordon Young, who had been caretaker following manager Mixu Paatelainen’s departure, while coaching advisors Darren Taylor and Grant Johnson are also coming in from Stark’s Park.

“It is no secret that I’m a United fan, but I made this decision with my head this time,” McKinnon told BBC Scotland. “It could have been quite easy to rule with my heart.

“I’ve made the right decision. It just feels so right for me to be here, I am very comfortable at this club and I can’t wait to get started,” he added. “This is a fantastic club and a fantastic opportunity for me.”
