This article is a tribute to 71 year old John Simpson, a Kilmarnock fan who suffered a cardiac arrest at the Dundee United v Kilmarnock game. He had just presented a cheque for £2500 to the Heather Hird appeal at half time in this fixture.

John had just returned to his seat after being on the pitch representing the Kilmarnock fans group the ?97 club. He was attempted to be brought round by fans and then paramedics. He spent the weekend in Ninewells hospital and passed away on Monday in the ICU unit of same hospital.

John is described as a warm and generous football fan, who as a life-long Killie fan, he warmly embraced the idea of helping Heather Hird out and wished to be a part of the fundraising efforts.

The funeral is today (31st March 2006) at St Ninians Bellfield, then onto Riccarton cemetery. Dundee United are making their own contribution to the BHF as consulted with the family.

The flags at Tannadice will be lowered to half mast 5 minutes prior to the game on Sunday against Rangers. An announcement will be made at the time. This is a further mark of respect for John and his family.

My condolences to all members of the Simpson family at this sad time.
