Dundee United supporters might be talking about the top 6, but manager Craig Levein hasn’t set his sights as high and is talking down his team’s chances of getting into top half of the SPL.
“It’s irrelevant to me where we are in terms of our league position at this minute in time, because, if we start talking about it, all we are doing is making a rod for our own back,” said Levein.
“You say ‘we better watch out, we are down at the bottom of the league’ and people freeze, get worried and start making mistakes, and the same can happen if you are at the top or in the middle, so you don’t talk about it.”
“If we start thinking we are in good form, or we are favorites for this or that match, I can tell you exactly what will happen ? we’ll get a kick up the backside.”
“What is important is that we concentrate not on what happened last week, the week before that or any statistics, but on doing our jobs properly ? then we can maybe walk away at the end of the match possibly having picked up points.”
“So, I am not interested in talking about league positions and achieving this or achieving that, I am not in the least bit interested, because it can be counter productive ? I’ve always said that.”
“If you look at when I was at Hearts or Leicester, it is something I didn’t talk about, because you start putting pressure on players.”
Dundee United might have lost 1-0 to Hearts at Tannadice on Saturday, but are still only 6 points off joint 5th placed Kilmarnock & Hibernian.
