Dundee United manager Craig Levein has made it clear that defender David McCracken is still on his way out of Tannadice in the summer, despite playing some of the best football of his career in recent months.

Levein revealed in Janauary that 25-year-old McCracken, the clubs longest serving player, was not part of his future plans and was free to find himself a new club.

It was expected that McCracken would leave during the remainder of the January transfer window, but injuried to other key players meant that Levein couldnt take the risk of releasing both McCracken and Alan Archibald (now with Partick Thistle).

McCracken has since played in all of Dundee United’s last 9 matches, going back to the 0-0 draw with Dunfermline at Tannadice on the 27th of January.

The Glasgow born defender played an important part in United’s recent 4-0 win over Hearts, the 1-1 draw with Celtic and an impressive 4-2 victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

However, despite his impressive performances, Levein is unlikely to change his decision about letting the 6ft2 defender leave at the end of the current season.

“That decision has been made and will not be changed,” admitted Levein this week.

“I know David is still playing for us at the moment, and playing well, but I`ve been given the task of turning this club around and to do that I must let players go and and David is one of them.”

“I still believe it is the right decision. Darren Dods will be coming in for next season, and I`m still looking for another central defender.”

“Far too many players have been here for too long, so players will be moving out and others moving in.”

“Not all of my decisions may turn out to be the right ones, but I have to make them.”
