Manager Craig Levein has admitted he feels that Dundee United are now safe enough from relegation, that they can start concentrating on a top 6 finish.

Levein has been careful to dismiss a late comeback from bottom-of-the-table Dunfermline, but United now have a 16 point cushion over Stephen Kenny’s struggling side.

“It can be dangerous to admit that Dundee United are out of the woods with regard to relegation, but despite erring on the side of caution as both a player and a manager , I will conceded it looks like that threat is no longer there,” admitted Levein in his weekly column for the Daily Record.

“Our win over Saint Mirren at Love Street put us 16 points ahead of Dunfermline at the bottom and there are 11 games to go.”

“Saturday’s result should hopefully take us clear of the dogfight to beat the drop and we can concentrate on looking up the way rather than over our shoulder.”

Although, Levein is still not happy with the attitude and inconsistency of his current side and believes there is a lot more work to do.

“One thing which hasn’t changed is my belief that we are still a long way from instilling that kind of winning mentality at Tannadice that I’m searching for.”

“There has been an unpredictability about our performances since I arrived and it has been a frustration for everyone involved.”

“We’re still in the process of building confidence and that’s the objective in the remaining games of this campaign.”
