Fantasy Football: Dundee United League

As a passionate Dundee United supporter, I spend most of my time eating, sleeping and…..eh….eh….absorbing/watching Scottish Premier League football.

But, I’ll admit that sometimes I struggle to name the opposition players who line-up against Dundee United…..so I would never claim to have an in-depth knowledge of players from the English Premiership.

I’ve failed so miserably at SPL Fantasy Football competitions in the past, but surely I couldn’t do any worse picking my own Premiership team…..could I???

I decided to take a chance and joined up with the new Vital Fantasy Football League and create my own Premiership Fantasy Football team.

Why Does It All Go Wrong?
When I’m picking my own Fantasy Football side, I always start with my strikers – because it’s the goal scorers who will make or break your team.

The most obvious strikers to go for are those who play for the top teams, like Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Unfortunately, these always turn out to be the most expensive:
Wayne Rooney (£9million),
Robin van Persie (£7million)
Didier Drogba (£9million)
Dirk Kuyt (£7million)

After I’ve chosen my 2 best strikers, I try to find a couple of quality midfielders who have an eye for goal:
Frank Lampard (£9million)
Steven Gerrard (£8million)
Cristiano Ronaldo (£9million)

Suddenly…..panic…..as I realise I’m very quickly running out of money.

You only start with a budget of £60million, so after picking your strikers and a couple of decent midfielders, I now have to put together the rest of the team on a shoe string budget.

I usually end up picking a couple of inept defenders and a goalkeeper who couldn’t catch a cold, let alone keep a clean sheet.?..and that’s probably why I’m so bad at Fantasy Football competitions.

I end up suffering from the same problem as Dunfermline’s 2-4-4 formation. My team is strong upfront and might score a couple of goals, but its so weak in defence that it ends up losing twice as many again.

Vital Fantasy Football
So, after some re-jigging and swapping talented players for a cheaper alternative – I finally compiled my Premiership “Dream” team.

I’m not expecting much – I’d be happy if my team managed to avoid relegation and avoided finishing the season with negative points.

I would have liked to have Wayne Rooney in the team, but I ran out of money, so this is the final squad I put together:

Edwin Van der Sar (£5.00m)

Phil Neville (£4.50m)
Olof Mellberg (£5.00m)
Danny Gabbidon (£3.00m)
Michael Dawson (£5.00m)

Cristiano Ronaldo (£9.00m)
Joey Barton (£5.50m)
Tim Cahill (£5.50m) Kieron Dyer (£5.00m)

Didier Drogba (£9.00m)
Theo Walcott (£3.50m)

Dundee United Mini-League
Ok, ok, when you’ve stopped giggling/smirking at my pathetic choices – I’d like to challenge you to do better.

Infact, I challenge every Dundee United supporter to pick their own Premiership Fantasy Football team.

I’ve now started a Dundee United mini-league, so we can separate the winners from the losers, to separate the Arabs from the Dees!!!

So, join up at www.vitalfantasyfootball.co.uk and then enter your team into the Dundee United mini-league…..its FREE, so no excuses!!!

League Name: ArabFC
Password: Arabs

If there is enough interest, I might even be able to arrange an additional prize for the winner of the Dundee United mini-league – but all Vital Football entrants have a chance of winning a £1000 cash prize for the overall best team and £250 for the manager of the month.
