Dundee United have thrashed out a compensation package with rivals Dundee, over the signature of defender Paul Dixon.

The 21-year-old Dundee captain is out of contract, but the Dens Park club are due some money because he is under 24.

It is expected that United will stump up £25,000 to sign the left-back, who would be the replacement for Christian Kalvenes who returned to Norway after his contract expired at the end of the season.

Both Kilmarnock and Norwich City had moves to sign Dixon rejected in June 2007 and Killie are rumoured to still have an interest in taking the Scotland Under-21 player to Rugby Park

“As a board we considered what we had on the table in way of compensation for Paul Dixon and decided the best deal for our club was to allow the player to speak to Dundee United,” admitted Dundee chief executive, Dave MacKinnon, to the Dundee Courier.

Dundee publically criticised United over the signing of midfielder Scott Robertson earlier in the month, after the 23-year-old joined the Tannadice club under freedom of contract.
