Dundee United midfielder John Rankin would be perfectly happy with an unspectacular 1-0 victory at Hearts on Sunday.

Last week United shared eight goals in a truly bizarre game with Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Tannadice despite racing into an early three-goal lead.

Since then playmaker Rankin has reacted by stating he would willingly forsake such thrills and spills for an unremarkable narrow win from his side.

“I would settle for an unremarkable 1-0 win against Hearts after that result last weekend!,” Rankin told the Dundee Courier. “Against Inverness, going forward we were breathtaking. We looked like we would score every time we attacked.

“But there was also poor play when defending set-pieces,” he warned. “It was more a case of our thinking about how we were going to score from the Inverness attacks. We are such a positive team in how we think and how we go about the game that even when they were coming back at us we were thinking about the counter-attack.”
