Dundee United manager Peter Houston is calling for his side to work on seriously improving their start in games.

The Tangerines have found themselves trailing by a couple of goals in recent meetings with Celtic, Hibernian and Kilmarnock and although recovering to draw in two of them, a rather puzzled Houston is understandably keen for a major improvement.

“I have said many times before that the most important goal at SPL level is the first goal,” he told the Dundee Courier. “It is getting to the stage where it is hard work for us on the sidelines. Trying to change things within the structure of the team, to get them going and motivate them is hard.

“We have to learn that we can’t throw in performances like that and leave us having to produce such good second-half displays,” Houston added. “It is nothing to do with the fitness because the fitness levels are excellent, as we showed when we came back at Kilmarnock. So it looks as though it must be a mental thing.”
