Dundee United were unable to check Rangers’ continuing progress towards a fourth successive title after a 3-1 defeat at Ibrox.

Nikica Jelavic scored twice for the hosts and after skipper Jon Daly headed a reply with seventeen minutes remaining, Garry Kenneth’s own-goal finally settled the contest.

Goalscorer Daly actually missed a decent early chance when lifting over a cross from Johnny Russell, who then screwed wide from the edge of the area.

But Jelavic headed in Matt McKay’s 19th minute delivery to open the scoring and soon threatened to add another as Dusan Pernis saved well.

Daly could only find goalkeeper Allan McGregor from a Paul Dixon cross in reply, while Kenneth narrowly missed from distance early in the second period.

However, Dixon fouled substitute Gregg Wylde inside the area just past the hour and Jelavic did the rest from the penalty spot.

Ten minutes later Daly gave the visitors renewed hope when heading in Kenneth’s cross, only for the big defender to then nod past his own keeper from Steven Whittaker’s ball in.

Rangers had Wylde sent-off in stoppage time for an off-the-ball incident but by the the contest was already well-decided.
