Dundee United earned a Scottish Cup final place against Tayside rivals St Johnstone next month with a 3-1 victory over Rangers at Ibrox.

Midfielder Stuart Armstrong opened their account midway through the first-half and Gary Mackay-Steven soon added a second.

Rangers reduced the deficit three minutes before the break when Steven Smith’s low free-kick escaped Radoslaw Cierzniak at his near post.

However, a bad mistake from opposite number Steve Simonsen allowed Nadir Ciftci to eventually settle the tie with seven minutes remaining.

Dean Shiels missed an early chance for the hosts before Gavin Gunning headed clear and with Ciftci returning from an offside position, Armstrong struck beyond Simonsen.

Former United striker Jon Daly hoisted over at the other end, until Ryan Gauld’s determined run ended with Mackay-Steven scooping high over the keeper and into the net.

Cierzniak should have done better when Smith cut the arrears before the break, although he later did well to keep out another free-kick from the same player.

But Simonsen then badly miscontrolled a Richard Foster back-pass and Ciftci rounded the keeper and slotted into an empty net – directly in front of the celebrating travelling supporters.
