Dundee United are in action at second division Airdrie United in the Scottish Communities League Cup on Tuesday evening (kick-off 7.45pm).

Striker Johnny Russell is still suspended and defender Sean Dillon injured while Keith Watson won’t feature on Airdrie’s plastic playing surface due concerns over his knee history. That should see Barry Douglas coming back into the side.

“There’s no doubt that we are a better team with Danny Swanson in it,” manager Peter Houston told BBC Scotland. “That’s two games on the bounce for him now and there’s no doubt that only someone with Danny’s quality could have scored that goal against Inverness.

“He’s a very creative player and, not only does he score goals, but he sets up chances for others. He’s certainly a big player for us.”

Airdrie may include former Celtic and Hearts youth goalkeeper Connor Fairley following his recent appearance as a trialist. Regular stopper Paul McKane has been struggling with a foot injury.

There are also current selection issues over defenders Graeme Goodhall and Paul Lovering, together with winger Alastair Woodburn.
