Dundee United’s promotion hopes continue to falter with a 3-2 defeat at bottom-of-the-table St Mirren.

Harry Davis had them behind after only a couple of minutes, and Stevie Mallan’s free-kick restored that lead after on loan Tony Andreu equalised.

Lewis Morgan duly added a third goal from close-range on the hour, with Andreu once again replying ten minutes later.

On loan Crewe Alexandra defender Davis immediately forced in the opener when Rory Loy helped on Mallan’s delivery after William Edjenguele handled.

However, the unmarked Andreu levelled with a low finish from Simon Murray’s cross; although Mallan soon whipped a long-range free-kick inside Cammy Bell’s near post.

Goalscorer Andreu headed Willo Flood’s cross onto an upright early in the second-half, but Morgan then struck at the far post after ex-United loanee Cammy Smith provided the assist.

And though Andreu curled his second into the far corner with still around twenty minutes remaining, it wasn’t enough to rescue visitors who also lost Scott Fraser to a suspected foot injury.

The two clubs meet again in the Challenge Cup final at Fir Park on 25th March.
