Dundee United slipped five points behind leaders St Mirren with a 2-0 defeat at the Paisley 2021 Stadium.

Celtic-bound Lewis Morgan scored both goals after the break following the visitors missing another penalty.

Morgan, who is set for a £300,000 move to Celtic Park next week before being loaned straight back to the club, drilled low into the far corner for the opener just ahead of the hour-mark.

And the 21-year-old ensured maximum points with another clinical strike into the same corner with twelve minutes remaining.

The Tangerines failed to offer much direct threat apart from Paul McMullan’s penalty being saved by Craig Samson.

On loan goalkeeper Harry Lewis claimed an early Stephen McGinn volley, although it was actually the visitors enjoying better possession.

And when Ian McShane fouled centre-back Mark Durnan at a corner they had an opportunity to make it count, but McMullan’s penalty was thwarted by Samson.

Midfielder Scott Fraser struck wide but he was one of a trio of United players receiving knocks and ultimately being replaced.

Skipper Willo Flood was another, that ahead of match-winner Morgan cutting inside from the left and driving low beyond Lewis for the crucial opening goal.

Morgan then collected a short free-kick and took advantage of a favourable ricochet before locating virtually the identical spot.

Former United loanee Cammy Smith should have had another following a defensive slip by Paul Quinn, but keeper Lewis blocked with his legs.
