SPL Set To Ban Ground Sharing?

Like a bunch of playground bullies who enjoy throwing their weight around, the SPL clubs will this week consider implementing another rule to make things even tougher on the lower division clubs.

In the past, the SPL has prevented clubs from being promoted in the top flight, because they have a “sub standard” ground, which doesn`t satisfy the minimum seating requirements.

This season, Gretna had to ground share with Motherwell, to give them a chance to bring their own stadium up to the minimum SPL standards.

However, their could be a change to the rules, after Dundee United`s match against Brooke Mileson`s minnows was called-off on Saturday.

The Fir Park turf is in a terrible state because both Motherwell and Gretna playing their home matches at the ground, with 5 call offs in recent months.

Our local rivals Dundee suffered 2 Scottish Cup postponements, while Motherwell`s matches against Celtic and Inverness Caley Thistle were also called-off because the pitch was unplayable.

“It’s something that we’ll be discussing in boardrooms over the next few weeks. I’m sure something will be said about it,,” SPL secretary Ian Blair told the Scotsman.

“Ultimately, the SPL board will decide whether or not ground-sharing will continue but we couldn’t ignore the views of our members.”

“However, I understand that Motherwell have identified some improvements that can be made in the summer which will reduce the likelihood of postponements next year.”

If the SPL do decide to ban ground sharing next season, it wouldn`t make Gretna`s life any easier – after struggling at the both of the league all season, they’ve recently been reported to have some financial troubles.

Looks like you’ll actually have to merge with your rivals rather than just sharing a ground, then!!!
