I was really shocked to hear the news of Phil O`Donnell`s death, when it was announced on the radio on Saturday night.
I was returning to Dundee after the 5-3 defeat, when I heard the Motherwell captain has passed away.
There was an uneasy silence inside Fir Park, when O`Donnell collapsed in the closing stages of the SPL match.
Even the visiting Dundee United supporters were stunned into silence, as both sets of players screamed for medical assistance.
O`Donnell`s nephew – David Clarkson – looked visibly shaken by something he`d seen and at one stage all the players appeared to be heading back into the dressing room.
The Motherwell supporters chanted O`Donnell`s name, and both set of supporters gave O`Donnell a standing ovation as he was stretchered off the pitch.
I think the SPL made the right decision to cancel Wednesday`s between Motherwell and Hibs as a mark of respect.
I hope I never see another professional footballer collapse in the middle of a match, its not something I`d wish on any player – opposition or not.
I`m still a little shaken-up by the incident myself and my thoughts go out to O`Donnell`s family.
