The SFA are apparently giving serious consideration to Dundee United manager Craig Levein becoming the next Scotland manager, after Walter Smith resigned from the post to re-join Rangers.
Walter Smith and Ally McCoist were confirmed as the new Rangers management duo on Wednesday afternoon, with the SFA threatening the Ibrox side with legal action for “tapping” up an SFA employee.
SFA chief executive David Taylor has condemned David Murray for inducing Walter Smith into resigning his post as Scotland boss and the SFA are planning to sue both Rangers & Smith (for breach of contract).
The new Gers boss will be incharge for this weekends SPL match against Dundee United at Ibrox, with bookies currently making Craig Levein one of the favourites to take Walter Smith’s old job with the International team.
Scotland coach Tommy Burns is the bookies favourite for the job, but speculation suggests that the SFA already have a short-list and want to interview 4 others for the position – Alex McLeish, Joe Jordan, Kenny Dalglish and Craig Levein!!!
There are further suggestions that the SFA’s first choice is a Scottish manager who is currently in employment – which might rule out Alex McLeish, Gary McAllister and Graeme Souness – but Levein has worked minor miracles since his arrival at Tannadice in November and his success over the last few months is bound to have caught the eye of someone at the SFA.
The chance of becoming Scotland manager is likely to be given serious consideration by Levein, since it’s a challenge that many managers aspire to at least once during their careers.
The question is whether Levein feels this is the right time to take up that challenge, or to continue building on the work he’s begun at Tannadice, but everyone at the club and the supporters are hoping he decides to stay with Dundee United for at least another few seasons.
If the SFA did approach Levein, they would first have to get permission from the Dundee United board, otherwise they would be branded hypocrites and might find themselves also being sued for “tapping” up someone else’s employee!!!
