First Minister Alex Salmond must be only person in Scotland who wasn`t aware of Dundee United`s record against Barcelona.
The SNP leader, who represents the constituency of Banff and Buchan, met with Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard and his squad at their training camp in St Andrews earlier this week.
Although, despite the amount of coverage given to Dundee United`s past successes against the Catalan club, Hearts supporter Salmond had to be reminded about United`s 100% record over Barca.
“Someone reminded me earlier that Dundee United were 4 wins up, a 100% record against Barcelona,” admitted Salmond in an interview with ArabZone – Dundee United`s official members-only website.
However, Salmond doesn`t think that Barcelona will make it easy for Dundee United to continue their unbeaten run in Thursday nights exhibition match.
He continued, “This is not a team that likes to get beat by anybody, at any time, so they`ll be trying.”
“The way Rijkaard was talking they are here to even up the score a bit – you better watch out.”
“I think once United have finished softening up Barcelona, then Hearts will be able to move in on Saturday for the kill.”
“Maybe United and Hearts can catch them at the right moment, so who knows. United might make it 110% against Barcelona and Hearts might even scrape our first win.”
Not that Scotland`s First Minister will be attending Tannadice on Thursday evening, because whether he wants to or not, he`s got official duties to perform.
“Obviously, Tannadice is the place to be rather than Westminster, but you`re kind of expected to make a speech in the Commons,” he said reluctantly.
However, Salmond wouldn`t be First Minister if he didn`t try to talk up the benefits to the whole country of Barcelona visit.
“Having one of the worlds greatest teams in Scotland during the pre-season, gives a big lift to Scotland, so there are winners all round.”
“They are having a great time, and hopefully that will translate to other teams. They may come back, other teams may come back too.”
“It`s a big lift to the pre-seasonal excitement in Scotland. If I can do something about the weather, then it would be just perfect.”
