Dundee United needed extra-time to finally get past the challenge of First Division Ross County in their Co-operative Insurance Cup third round tie at a rain-soaked Victoria Park.

David Goodwillie gave them the lead just beyond the hour from a twice-taken penalty before Iain Vigurs sent the game into extra-time with an equaliser four minutes from the end. However, a Scott Boyd own goal finally tipped the balance into the visitors favour.

Arabs keeper Dusan Pernis was forced into a low save from Vigurs early on before his opposite number Michael McGovern demonstrated superb reactions to keep out Jon Daly. The visitors again went close with Goodwillie collecting Daly’s through ball and smashing an effort against the crossbar, while Mark Corcoran glanced a header wide at the opposite end just before the break.

But a foul by Mark Lawson on Goodwillie sixteen minutes into the second period allowed him to open the scoring from the penalty spot at the second attempt after his initial effort was ruled out for encroachment into the area. Home keeper McGovern managed to get a hand on the ball but couldn’t keep it out.

The contest was back level with four minutes remaining as Vigurs seized upon Gary Wood’s pass and finished low past Pernis, until the visitors forced themselves back in front during the first period of extra-time when the unfortunate Boyd diverted Scott Robertson’s cross into his own net for what proved the winner.
