There is speculation that the SPL are about to do a complete U-turn on their decision not to postpone the Rangers versus Dundee United match.

Rangers had asked for this weekend`s SPL match to be rescheduled, to allow the Ibrox club more time to prepare for the UEFA Cup final in Manchester next mid-week.

However, despite originally refusing Ranger’s request, the SPL met with SFA representatives on Tuesday in an attempt to reach a compromise.

Russian side Zenit St Petersburg have already benefitted from having 2 league matches postponed, giving Dick Advocaat`s side a free run up to the UEFA Cup final on the 14th of May.

Now, it`s looking likely that Walter Smith`s side will also be allowed to postpone Dundee United clash, which would result in the season being extended even further.

Dundee United`s last match of the campaign against Celtic has already been pushed back 4 days to Thursday, the 22nd of May, to allow Rangers to squeeze in their remaining 5 SPL, 1 Scottish Cup and UEFA Cup final matches.

“I`ve a degree of sympathy for Walter Smith and the Rangers boys, because they have some very important games coming up,” Levein told the Evening Telegraph yesterday.

“As Dundee United’s manager, I have to look at our side and, as things stand, we`re preparing for the game going ahead on Saturday.”

Meanwhile, the SFA chairman George Peat has thrown his backing behind Rangers over their controversial request.

“We should be trying everything in our power to help a Scottish club win in Europe,” George Peat told the Daily Record this week.

“The SPL have to tell the SFA when they will finish their season and we agree to that so we can then agree to another extension.”

“The Dundee United match can be moved and should be moved.”

It would be very typical for the SPL to give into the pressure of their establishment club. I still fancy the ref’s to play their part in handing them the league this year as they did in 2003 and 2005.
