Dundee United striker Johnny Russell will be sidelined for six weeks after hurting his ankle during a game of head tennis.

Russell spent most of last season on loan at Raith Rovers but had already been earmarked by manager Peter Houston for a more involved role at Tannadice this season.

But a freak incident on the opening day of pre-season training appears destined to leave him playing catch up over the first few months of the campaign.

“Johnny was playing head tennis with a couple of the lads and went over his ankle,” a disappointed Houston told The Courier. “He was taken to hospital and they say he has damaged the ligaments and will be out for about six weeks.

“The rest of the lads looked good, although all we did was some fitness tests,” he added.

“We have a lot more planned for the next couple of weeks as we work hard to get everyone in shape.”
