Dundee United boss Peter Houston is expecting Irishman Richie Ryan to shine on the European stage.

The 27-year-old midfielder arrived from Sligo Rovers in January and is currently preparing with his team-mates for the Europa League third round qualifying tie against Russian side Dynamo Moscow at the end of next week.

“Richie is a good player. He’s calm in possession and can pass the ball which is the kind of player we’ll need in Europe,” Houston told the Daily Record. “He’s had to be patient because last season we hit a run of form just after Richie had joined us and guys like John Rankin, Willo Flood and Scott Robertson were doing well in the middle.

“But towards the end of the season he got a few games under his belt and looked the part,” he added. “Now I have to say he’s looking a lot brighter and sharper and he’s done really well in pre-season games. I’ve said all along he’s talented and hopefully he can show that when we go into the European stage.”

Meanwhile, Houston also confirmed he already knows his starting line-up for the first-leg clash at Tannadice: “We’ll obviously work more on shape and tactics nearer the game but I know in my head which team I’m going to play.”
