It was expected the David McCracken would be leaving Dundee United during the January transfer window, but Craig Levein decided to retain the defenders services until the end of the season after Lee Mair was ruled out for 6 weeks with a knee injury.
McCracken – Dundee United’s longest serving player – was told his contract would not be renewed when his current deal expires in the summer, with Levein offering the 25-year-old the chance to find a new club during the transfer window.
When Lee Mair injured himself in training last weekend, Levein asked McCracken to stay on until the end of the campaign, with the news that 26-year-old Mair could be out until the start of April.
However, Levein received a boost this week, when Mair returned to training well ahead of schedule.
“Lee Mair has trained for the first time which was a nice surprise,” admitted Levein.
“We thought he might be out for much longer but, as it transpires, he’s got quite lax knee ligaments which has helped him along.”
If Mair does make a quick recovery from his injury, it’s likely he will return to the United starting line-up at the expense of surplus-to-requirements McCracken.
Sadly, it’s now too late for McCracken to move to a new club, until the transfer window re-opens in the summer – but hopefully he will still be given an opportunity to play some part in the United 1st team and will use that chance to catch the attention of another club.
There is no doubt that McCracken is a talented defender, it’s just his attitude which Craig Levein isn’t happy with – suggesting he is one of several players who doesn’t care if they lose 3,4,5 or 6 goals during a game.

dont think it makes any different to mccracken. he knows he is going anyway, this just clarifys the situation for him.
Still, he has been the clubs longest serving player, so doesnt he at least deserve an extra chance to earn himself a new deal with another club?
