Dundee United midfielder John Rankin says describing his side as simply a “long-ball team” are way off the mark.

The Tangerines have received some adverse comments for going more direct this season but their playmaker Rankin believes they have always mixed in plenty of fluent passing flair as part of their recipe.

“We’re a good footballing side,” he told the Dundee Courier. “I don’t think a lot of people give us credit for that. They try to make out we go back to front all the time, which is not true. It’s ridiculous that we’re tagged with that image.

“Yes, we do out crosses into the box because we’ve got a great asset in big Jon Daly,” Rankin continued. “We’ve got guys like Gary Mackay-Steven and Johnny Russell who are so direct that when they get wide they go straight for the byeline and hit crosses. But it’s frustrating when people say we’re a long-ball team because we’re definitely not.”
