Dundee United were denied by a late equaliser and forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Motherwell at Tannadice.

The Tangerines had earlier benefited from a Stephen Craigan own-goal just before the half-hour but were ultimately thwarted as Michael Higdon levelled.

Home keeper Dusan Pernis was soon called upon to fend off an early Tom Hateley free-kick and Omar Daley also tested him with a low drive after Gary Mackay-Steven had shown enterprise to lift a rising shot over at the opposite end.

Jon Daly might have done better for the hosts from a far post header following a cross by Stuart Armstrong, while Pernis was again in action to turn aside a Higdon header before his opposite number Darren Randolph reacted brilliantly to keep out John Rankin.

He was though beaten as Paul Dixon’s cross was turned into his own net by Craigan under challenge from Johnny Russell, although the visitors always offered definite threat with Slovakian keeper Pernis halting both Keith Lasley and Higdon.

At the opposite end Randolph did well to meet Russell’s low drive and Daly spurned another opening before more excellent work from Mackay-Steven ended with him only finding the side-netting.

Motherwell continued to search for an equaliser and Jamie Murphy forced another low stop from Pernis, while Higdon almost knocked in Nicky Law’s cross before eventually being set-up late on by Estonian substitute Henrik Ojamaa.
