Everton teenager Ross Barkley headed a winner just before the end to claim a narrow 1-0 success against Dundee United in a pre-season friendly at Tannadice.

But the hosts showed up well throughout and recent signing Michael Gardyne forced Tim Howard to save before Johnny Russell fired over from the edge of the box. Barry Douglas made a decent challenge just before the break to keep the scoreline level.

Russell once more tested American international keeper Howard following the restart and Willo Flood then set up Ryan Dow, only for Howard to deny both him and defender Gavin Gunning from a later header.

The visitors nearly snatched a goal as Apostolos Vallios curled wide before Seamus Coleman delivered from the right and eighteen-year-old Barkley headed past Radoslaw Czierzniak and into the far corner.
