Jon Daly Joins Up With United Squad

John Daly celebrated his 24th birthday with his first training session as a Dundee United player.

The striker, signed from Hartlepool on Friday for an undisclosed fee, joined up with his new teammates this afternoon and began preparations for his expected debut against Rangers.

Daly has signed a 2 and a half year deal with United and is looking forward to the challenge of playing in the SPL, but is especially looking forward to playing infront of a 50,000 spectators at Ibrox this weekend.

“It’s obviously a big step up from Hartlepool, but it is one I believe I can make and I want to do well,” Daly told the Courier.

“If selected, starting at a place like Rangers on Saturday will be special. It’s a big stadium and there will be a great atmosphere.”

Craig Levein is still planning to sign several more players during the January transfer window, with Shelbourne’s Sean Dillion likely to be confirmed as a Dundee United player later this week,

Shelbourne prematurely announced last week that the 23-year-old central defender had already signed for United, but despite his interest in the player, Levein hadn’t actually spoke to Dillion or his agent at that time.

However, things have progressed since last week and Dillon is close to becoming Levein’s 3rd January signing, after Morgaro Gomis and John Daly joined the club last week.

“I’m pleased to get Daly in and I would hope to know about Dillon in the next couple of days,” said the Dundee United manager.

“He (Jon Daly) has been getting a few this season, but I have not signed him just as a goal scorer. I see him as a player who will make goals for others as well.”

“We have players with pace who can run in behind and what Daly brings is a physical presence who gives us the option of playing the ball up for him to hold.”

“In games where teams are sitting in, he will give us the opportunity to put crosses into the box and that is something we have lacked.”

Although, Levein still has his eye on a few more players, but has to make sure the finances are there first, before he can bring anyone else in.

Levein continued, “I have a few other ideas and I think I will be able to get two in and possibly three, though a lot will depend on finance and I will be sitting down with the chairman about that.”
