Dundee United opened their league programme with a narrow victory against Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Highlands.

Summer arrival Paul McMullan scored the only goal of the contest from a thirteenth-minute penalty to ensure the visitors maximum points.

George Oakley soon drew United keeper Harry Lewis into action before opposite number Mark Ridgers reacted brilliantly to keep out Scott Fraser.

But he was then sent the wrong way by McMullan from the penalty spot after being tripped inside the area. That incident also witnessed Caley manager John Robertson being dismissed to the stands.

Sam Stanton was in turn denied another by Iain Vigurs and Tam Scobbie also volleyed directly at Ridgers, while both Ricky Calder and Brad McKay replied wide and Oakley also found the side-netting.

Liam Polworth was next to go close for the hosts after the break, with Stanton twice missing at the other end – the second time from a weak clearance by keeper Ridgers leaving an inviting unattended goal.

Meanwhile, Polworth thumped another effort over in between as his colleagues continued to be restricted by their opponents during the closing stages.
