Dundee United manager Peter Houston fully appreciates the need for cutbacks in the current economic climate.

However, that has left him with his smallest-ever squad at Tannadice following once again the departure of a number of key players during the summer.

The consequence of that sees United trailing well behind their finishes of recent years and with just local rivals Dundee currently separating them from the bottom of the table.

“We are working with the smallest squad we’ve ever had,” Houston admitted to the Dundee Courier. “You keep cutting and I understand the board have to cut because there is no money there. You have to make cuts every year.

“It’s now the third year in a row that we’ve been cut and it’s important they do that to balance the books,” he added. “But what people have to remember is that it will take time to rebuild. We have good, young players but some are not ready yet to play every week.”
