Dundee United were really put to the sword as Celtic scored three times during each half in an emphatic 6-1 victory at Parkhead.

Newcomer Jason Denayer, Kris Commons and Stefan Johansen earned the champions a commanding interval advantage before Anthony Stokes’ free-kick had Charlie Mulgrew claiming the final touch.

Substitute Jo Inge Berget then added two more either side of John Rankin replying with a deflected effort.

Denayer opened the floodgates on four minutes when steering into the roof of the net before Commons turned in Stokes’ corner for a second goal.

Midfielder Johansen next dispossessed Paul Paton to make it even more comfortable at the break for the home side.

That continued following the restart with Stokes’ free-kick witnessing Mulgrew celebrating what he believed was the final touch, and Berget turning in Efe Ambrose’s knock-back of Stokes’ corner.

Rankin did fire a consolation inside the near post on 71 minutes but Berget duly added another from close-range in the final minute.

Celtic also twice struck the woodwork through Callum McGregor and Stokes and could have had even more goals, while both Gary Mackay-Steven and Nadir Ciftci threatened at the other end.
