Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson says the £2.8m deal taking striker David Goodwillie to Blackburn Rovers certainly eases the financial situation at Tannadice.

The English Premier League side held off the challenge of SPL champions Rangers to finally deliver the 22-year-old to Ewood Park on Wednesday.

“The money, just about all of it, will go in debt reduction for the long-term stability of this club,” Thompson explained to BBC Scotland. “This club has been under enormous pressure from the bank. It should take some of the pressure off.

“We are still in debt, but this should take about a third of our debt off,” he continued.”It is a fantastic deal for the club. It will give us security financially I think for a few years now.”
