Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara admitted he has no concerns about playing teenager Ryan Gauld in the cut-and-thrust of the SPL.

The diminutive seventeen-year-old was introduced from the bench around the hour-mark of last week’s fiercely-contested derby draw with neighbours Dundee at Tannadice. And McNamara confirmed he would have no hesitation in doing exactly the same thing again despite the youngster’s still slender frame.

It marked a third substitute appearance this season for Aberdeen-born Gauld after originally making his debut in a 2-0 win at Motherwell ten months ago.

“Ryan Gauld has got something and so do several of the other young players,” McNamara told the Dundee Courier. “People probably thought it was a gamble putting him on in the derby when you look at his size and his stature.

“But not for me because he’s capable of providing a spark,” he added. “He is someone able to create something ? he’s brave and able to do it.”
