Holders Dundee United are hosting Alloa Athletic in the Irn Bru Challenge Cup this afternoon.

Manager Ray McKinnon was expected to field a mixed side containing youngsters and a few senior performers.

“Saturday’s game, we’ll use to give people games, or take them out and do things with them to get them to where they need to be in these next two weeks,” he earlier told the Dundee Evening Telegraph. “It’s a delicate one and we need to get that balance.

“There are people who probably need to play and others who we will do something different with because we need to get their fitness levels up.”

United will be looking for an immediate response after their disappointing 3-0 league defeat at St Mirren last week.

However, they’ve already accounted for Cowdenbeath 2-0 in the first round of the competition through striker Patrick N’Koyi’s second-half brace.
