Dundee United rose to the top of the Championship table with three goals before the break against Falkirk at Tannadice.

Striker Scott McDonald scored their first when flicking a Jamie Robson cross over his own head midway through the opening half.

Left-back Robson then struck into the bottom corner to double the advantage before midfielder Willo Flood added a third close to the interval.

Billy King had already fired against the underside of the crossbar within three minutes of the start while goalkeeper Robbie Thomson turned over from Fraser Fyvie.

But McDonald, with back to goal, cleverly found the far corner of the net following Robson cutting into the area from the left.

Stewart Murdoch was next denied by Thomson at point-blank range, until providing for Robson to increase the advantage from around twelve-yards.

It got even better when Sam Stanton released Flood and a low finish across goal made it three for the hosts.

Substitute James Craigen saw an effort for the visitors after the break while Thomson thwarted Scott Fraser at the other end.

He also blocked from King on the edge of the box and Fraser sent the rebound onto the crossbar, with both Stanton and Fyvie having further efforts before the latter struck the foot of an upright.
