Holders Dundee United secured a 3-1 victory against Alloa Athletic in the Irn Bru Challenge Cup but certainly left it late at Tannadice.

Striker Patrick N’koyi netted both goals against Cowdenbeath in the previous round and was to again open the scoring from the penalty spot.

But Kevin Cawley soon drew the visitors back level, until a couple of excellent injury-time strikes from Paul McMullan and Willo Flood eventually clinched the tie.

Youngster Logan Chalmers had seen a couple of early attempts for the hosts, while their opponents also threatened with Cawley and Alan Cook both getting opportunities.

However, after McMullan had sent an early second-half effort narrowly over, it required N’Koyi to convert a 70th minute penalty after being fouled by skipper Andrew Graham.

Nevertheless the visitors were back level just seven minutes later with Cawley on target from Adam Martin’s inviting cut-back.

And it took United until stoppage time for McMullan to receive from N’Koyi and surge into the area before driving into the net.

Midfielder Flood then struck a third goal from outside of the box to confirm the avoidance of extra-time and guarantee progress.
