Dundee United began their League Cup Group C programme with a 2-0 victory against Raith Rovers at Tannadice.

New signings Paul McMullan and James Keatings both opened their accounts following a scoreless first period.

Meanwhile, Deniz Mehmet, Tam Scobbie, Billy King and Jordie Briels were similarly given debuts. Latest arrival Sam Stanton, on loan from Hibernian, was included amongst the substitutes.

McMullan had seen an early attempt saved by Aaron Lennox, whose opposite number Mehmet then cleared towards Greig Spence and Mark Durnan was required to prevent Liam Buchanan from finding the net.

Buchanan headed another opportunity wide before Keatings drew another stop from Lennox after the break.

McMullan also nodded a Scobie cross off-target, but then curled in a 59th minute opener after Scott Fraser supplied youngster Scott Allardice.

Newcomer Stanton was introduced from the bench on 69 minutes – and soon brought down in the area by Iain Davidson. Keatings made no mistake from the spot.

Goalscorer McMullan later forced a fine reaction from Lennox, although Buchanan should have done better for the visitors when left with only Mehmet blocking his progress.
