Early Championship leaders Dundee United defeated Queen of the South 2-1 despite finishing the game with only ten players at Tannadice.

New signing Scott McDonald converted Paul McMullan’s cross for the opening goal but Callum Fordyce had already cancelled it out by the interval.

McMullan was later dismissed for a clash with the cautioned Shaun Rooney before substitute Scott Fraser provided the winner midway through the second-half.

Stephen Dobbie saw an early opportunity come and go for visitors while Jamie Robson, deputising for the injured Tam Scobbie, was only denied by the far upright

The Doonhamers still fell into arrears moments later as McMullan crossed for McDonald to open his goal-account from close-range.

However, that was soon matched when Fordyce equalised after a free-kick wasn’t fully cleared; while United suffered a further blow after McMullan was given his marching orders.

On loan keeper Harry Lewis was then required as ex-Tannadice midfielder John Rankin and Lyndon Dykes both threatened early in the second-half.

But ten-man United still discovered a winner as the edge-of-the-area Billy King allowed Fraser to drive low past Alan Martin.

Debutant Chris Kane and Jordan Marshall went on to be thwarted by Lewis while the visitors continued to search for a late equaliser.
