Striker Scott McDonald scored a late winner as Dundee United moved into second place in the table with a 2-1 victory against Greenock Morton at Tannadice.

Fellow marksman James Keatings had earlier given them a 65th minute advantage, but that was soon cancelled out by substitute Bob McHugh.

The Tangerines were seeking a first win in four league games and Paul McMullan, Fraser Fyvie and Keatings each produced first-half efforts.

McMullan also crossed for Keatings’ header to be thwarted by goalkeeper Derek Gaston, while Ross Forbes proved wide of the mark when replying towards the other end.

But midway through the second period McMullan allowed Keatings to slot the opener past Gaston, although McHugh then turned in an equaliser after Forbes had supplied the delivery.

However, with seven minutes remaining Billy King’s cross was headed against the woodwork by defender Mark Durnan and McDonald decisively seized upon the rebound.
