Patrick N’Koyi scored two second-half goals as holders Dundee United accounted for Cowdenbeath in the Irn Bru Cup first round at Tannadice.

The much-changed hosts included only returning striker James Keatings from the team which had defeated Queen of the South at the weekend.

Ryan Connelly struck an upright early on for their visitors while Deniz Mehmet also kept out Robert Buchanan before Alasdair Smith drove wide from distance.

However, Keatings was a definite threat at the other end as ex-United keeper Joe McGovern twice saved from the summer recruit.

McGovern then went on to deny both N’Koyi and Keatings after the break, until Scott Fraser exchanged passes with Willo Flood and allowed N’Koyi the opening goal with just over an hour played.

Six minutes later Flood’s cross was headed in by N’Koyi to double the advantage, before Keatings later curled an effort against the visitors’ crossbar.
