Dundee United claimed a first league victory in six attempts at the expense of lowly Ayr United at Tannadice.

The Tangerines went in front courtesy of striker Simon Murray midway through the opening half, although Gary Harkins cancelled it out from the penalty spot soon after the break.

However, defender Mark Durnan later grabbed a much-needed winner for the promotion-chasers with only twelve minutes remaining.

On loan Tony Andreu earlier struck wide from the edge of the area following recalled fellow weekend goalscorer Thomas Mikkelsen’s inviting lay-off.

But the hosts still moved into the lead when Murray left Nick Devlin trailing and drove through goalkeeper Greg Fleming’s legs for his thirteenth goal of the campaign.

Ex-Dundee forward Harkins was soon blocked at the opposite end and Conrad Balatoni’s header also called Cammy Bell into action, until the former Rangers keeper was sent the wrong way from the spot by Harkins after Andreu was penalised early in the second period.

His opposite number Fleming next fended away Andreu’s reply and Alex Nicholls could only locate the side-netting from the rebound, while marksman Murray also went on to be denied by the visiting keeper.

But Murray then returned a partially cleared Charlie Telfer corner and allowed Durnan to hook in his fifth goal of the season – before the centre-back later combined with Stewart Murdoch to clear off the line during the closing stages.
