Dundee United moved into the Irn-Bru Cup quarter-finals with a narrow 1-0 victory over Linfield at Tannadice.

But the holders had to wait until well into injury-time for substitute Logan Chalmers to provide the decisive moment.

Sam Stanton shot wide early on for them while keeper Deniz Mehmet blocked with his feet from Aaron Burns at the other end.

Andrew Waterworth also headed over a Kirk Millar cross for the visitors before next only locating the side-netting. Burns soon had a further attempt deflected behind.

Mehmet was then tested again by Robert Garrett’s low drive, and also reacted to prevent a Stewart Murdoch own-goal following the break.

Linfield were still with the opportunities and Burns failed to take advantage of an Andrew Mitchell cross, while substitute Jordan Stewart brought more action for Mehmet.

However, United could have gone in front when Graham Taylor’s low effort came back off an upright; until having a further shot parried by Gareth Deane and Chalmers seized on the rebound in added time.
