Dundee United moved level at the top of the Championship with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over leaders Hibernian at Tannadice.

On loan Tony Andreu scored the winner from a 73rd minute penalty after substitute Simon Murray was bundled over inside the area.

However, United keeper Cammy Bell had earlier saved Martin Boyle’s spot-kick following a trip in the box by Lewis Toshney.

The Tangerines were hampered during the initial stages when Blair Spittal was forced to depart for an extended period to receive stitches on a badly cut nose.

But they showed well during the opening forty-five minutes with Andreu three times threatening from distance, while Nick van der Velden failed to complete a routine pass towards the ideally-placed Scott Fraser after Paul Hanlon surrendered possession.

Happily restored to the action, Spittal was guilty of similar careless work following an attempted back-pass towards the other end, but fortunately Boyle’s first touch was poor. The United man saw a later close-range effort deflected over by the covering Darren McGregor.

Hibs clearly stepped up proceedings upon the restart and should have gone in front when Toshney’s clumsy challenge brought down Boyle, who claimed the penalty opportunity ahead of Grant Holt – and then struck too close to Bell, falling to his right.

The increasingly frustrated Holt and tireless man-of-the-match Willo Flood were both soon cautioned following a heated clash, while Bell superbly denied Andrew Shinnie before substitute Murray chased into the opposite area and was taken down by Liam Fontaine.

Leading scorer Andreu confidently stroked in the penalty to the delight of the celebrating home supporters – and his side successfully played out the remainder of the contest to complete a hugely important victory.
